Background Recipe story & origin

Warm, gooey cinnamon rolls with cream cheese frosting.

Cinnamon rolls likely originated in Sweden, where 'kanelbullar' have been made since at least the 1920s. American cinnamon rolls evolved differently, becoming larger, sweeter, and topped with cream cheese frosting-a distinctly American addition. The dough is enriched with butter, eggs, and milk, rolled with cinnamon-sugar filling, cut into rounds, and baked until golden. Mall chains like Cinnabon (founded 1985) popularized ultra-sweet, oversized versions. Traditional Scandinavian buns use cardamom and pearl sugar; American versions emphasize cinnamon and gooey frosting.
